Overview

Historification ("the Service") consists of a free WordPress plugin and a hosted backend service at historification.net. This policy explains what data the Service collects, how it is used, where it is stored, and what we do not do with it.

Data the Plugin Stores Locally

The WordPress plugin stores the following inside your own WordPress database, on your own hosting:

  • Article content — articles you have generated or are drafting, as a custom WordPress post type. This data never leaves your WordPress install except as needed to call the backend for generation or publishing.
  • API key — the per-site key issued at signup on historification.net, used to authenticate calls to our backend.
  • Topic profile — your niche, voice, and editorial guardrails (used as a system prompt for AI generation).
  • Settings — your preferences for scheduling, default voice, default video format, etc.

Data the Backend Service Stores

The backend service at historification.net stores the following per WordPress site:

  • Account record — your site URL, tier, contact name, business/publication name, country, the email address used for billing and service notifications, the date and version of the Terms & Conditions you accepted, the IP address recorded when you registered (used for fraud prevention and as a record of your acceptance), and your Stripe customer ID.
  • OAuth tokens — long-lived access tokens for the social networks you have connected (YouTube refresh token, Instagram page access token, Facebook page access token, etc.). These are stored encrypted and used only to publish on your behalf. They are revocable at any time from the plugin's settings page.
  • Generated assets — carousel images and narrated videos produced for your publications. Stored in cloud object storage and served to your readers via CDN.
  • Generation and publish logs — per-job records of what was generated, what was published, and when, retained for 90 days for support and debugging purposes.
  • Engagement snapshots — periodic fetches of view/like/comment counts from each connected platform, displayed in your engagement dashboard.

Third-Party Services

The backend service integrates with the following third parties to function. We send the minimum data necessary in each case:

  • OpenAI — article text, image generation prompts, narration scripts, and caption rewrites are processed via the OpenAI API. We do not send your platform OAuth tokens or billing data.
  • Social networks — YouTube, Instagram, Facebook (and others as they roll out). We send the video/image content, captions, and any metadata required to publish. We receive post IDs and engagement metrics back.
  • Stripe — paid-tier billing is handled by Stripe. Card numbers never touch our servers. We store only a Stripe customer ID and subscription metadata.
  • Google Cloud Storage — generated assets are stored here. Standard Google Cloud privacy policy applies.

What We Never Do

  • We do not sell your data to anyone.
  • We do not use your content to train AI models.
  • We do not track your readers across the web.
  • We do not place advertising cookies on your site visitors.

Data Retention

Account, OAuth, and generation logs are retained while your account is active. Upon cancellation, they are deleted within 30 days, except where retention is required for legal or tax reasons (e.g., Stripe invoices, retained for 7 years per UK HMRC rules).

Your Rights

Under UK GDPR you have the right to access, correct, export, or delete your personal data. Email hello@historification.net to make a request — we respond within 30 days.

Children's Privacy

The Service is not intended for use by individuals under the age of 16. We do not knowingly collect data from children.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Material changes will be communicated by email to active account holders.
